high school-aged New Yorkers are currently incarcerated on Rikers Island, the notorious and hyper-violent NYC jail.
of Rikers Island detainees are Black or Latino. By comparison, only 53% of New York City residents are Black or Latino.
of those held on Rikers have not been convicted of a crime. They are in jail awaiting trial, just because they cannot afford to pay bail.
Right now, 1,500 high-school age New Yorkers aren't free to attend school. Instead, they are being held at Rikers Island, one of the most violent jails in America.
The vast majority have not been convicted of a crime. They are in jail awaiting trial, simply because they can't afford to pay bail. 90% of them -- some as young as 16 years old -- will plead guilty to criminal charges just to escape that nightmare.
We can protect young New Yorkers from this injustice. We are raising money that will go directly to bailing out high school-aged kids on Rikers. The money raised to date will ensure that dozens of young New Yorkers who would have spent much of their school year on Rikers, one of the most violent jails in America, instead have the freedom to attend school. .
Contribute below to help us continue to free as many young people as we can. These are our children, and they belong in #ClassroomsNotCages.
With your help, we beat our $100,000 fundraising goal!
You can still help to get kids off of Rikers! Contribute below.
